ABOUT THE ENGAGING TEACHER
Helping educators make human capability visible.
The Engaging Teacher is an education nonprofit built around a simple idea: research should become useful.
We translate research and emerging ideas about teaching, learning, instructional design, and technology into practical resources educators can actually use. Our work explores what helps people think, learn, exercise judgment, and become more capable—and how those human capacities can remain visible as artificial intelligence changes the artifacts we create.
WHY THIS WORK EXISTS
The artifact was never the capability.
Education has always relied on artifacts as evidence. Essays, projects, tests, presentations, and credentials help us infer what someone understands and can do. But the artifact itself was never the capability. It was evidence of capability.
As AI makes increasingly sophisticated artifacts easier to produce, that distinction matters more. The challenge is not simply determining whether someone used AI. It is designing learning experiences where reasoning, judgment, curiosity, revision, decision-making, and understanding can still become visible.
AI didn’t create this problem.
It exposed it.
WHAT GUIDES US
A few ideas sit underneath nearly everything we make.
Capability matters more than artifacts.
Artifacts are useful, but they are not capability. When evidence becomes easier to generate, educators and leaders must become better at identifying what truly matters.
Judgment leaves traces.
Judgment appears in decisions, reasoning, reflection, revisions, tradeoffs, and explanations. The challenge is designing environments where those traces become visible.
Learning is relational.
People do their best thinking when they feel safe enough to wonder, challenge assumptions, and take intellectual risks. Learning is not merely cognitive. It is human.
OUR COMMITMENT
Good ideas should not stop at the edge of access.
The Engaging Teacher is committed to making high-quality ideas in education more useful and accessible. We translate research, emerging ideas, and complex questions about teaching, learning, and technology into practical resources educators can understand, adapt, and use.
We believe access to thoughtful, research-informed educational resources should not depend on an educator’s institution, budget, or proximity to expertise. That is why our work prioritizes openly available tools, frameworks, guides, and learning resources that help educators make informed, human-centered decisions.
Research should become useful. Useful knowledge should become accessible. And technology should expand human capability—not obscure it.
WHAT WE DO
Turning ideas into things educators can use.
Our work connects research and practice through free educational resources, original frameworks, professional learning, research translation, and experimentation with emerging approaches to teaching and learning.

OUR FOUNDER
The Engaging Teacher began with a question Brooke McKinney couldn’t stop asking.
Long before becoming a teacher, Brooke spent fourteen years working in coffee shops and eventually training everyone from first-day hires to coffee executives. She noticed that the people who became exceptional weren’t always the people who memorized the most. They noticed things. They adapted. They understood when a situation required something the script couldn’t provide.
They exercised judgment.
That observation followed her into classrooms, department leadership, instructional design, faculty development, educational technology, research, and artificial intelligence. Across each setting, the question remained remarkably similar: Why are some forms of capability easy to measure while others are easy to miss?
The Engaging Teacher grew from that question—from a place to share useful things with other educators into a nonprofit dedicated to exploring those questions more deliberately and making what we learn available to others.

The question has always been human.
Technology will change. The artifacts we create will change. The ways we teach, assess, and work will change with them.
But ultimately, this work is not about artificial intelligence.
It is about people. It is about learning. It is about creating environments where human judgment, capability, and potential become visible.
The Engaging Teacher is an Alabama nonprofit corporation founded in 2026.
Let’s continue the conversation.
Whether you’re exploring AI, redesigning assessment, developing educators, conducting research, or simply asking better questions about how people learn, we’d love to hear from you.
